Welcome to my second review, which is going to be on Shrek 2, if you couldn’t tell by the title. Let me first start off by saying this is my favorite movie, so I might be a little biased, but I think we can all agree that it was good. Shrek has given us great movies back to back, which is something not many movies can do. Some that have been good are How to Train Your Dragon, Planet of the Apes, Maze Runner, Captain America’s movies, and many others. It’s not really about whether or not they’re good, but are they needed?
You could easily argue that Shrek didn’t need three after the masterpiece of the first one, but if you ask someone cool like myself, we definitely needed them. But enough of my yapping, let’s get onto the review. I’d score this movie a perfect 10/10 based on the humor, the ability to rewatch, and the fact that it’s perfect for families. It’s entertaining for kids but has just the right amount of adult humor for older audiences to be entertained.
A little bit of a summary for you, Fiona and Shrek got married, enjoying their honeymoon together as Ogres, but she wants him to meet his parents. If you’ve watched the first movie, you know that her parents locked her in the tower because she was cursed to turn into an Ogre whenever night came. So imagine their surprise when she and Shrek show up at the castle, as full Ogres, and engaged? You can imagine the awkwardness and tension, specifically between her father and Shrek. The king obviously wanted the curse to be broken and the only way that would happen is through true love’s kiss. He was expecting her in her human form with a human prince, so he was clearly disappointed which caused Shrek to become insecure. He wanted Fiona’s parents to accept him, so he ventured out to find a potion that would make him “good enough” for Fiona.
He steals the potion from the Fairy Godmother who so happens to be Prince Charming’s mother, causing a big issue there. Donkey and Shrek take the potion, wake up, Donkey’s a horse, Shrek’s a human, blah blah, Fiona is a human too, since Shrek and her are in love (side effects of the potion), and yeah. After all that Prince Charming convinces Fiona that he is Shrek in human form, and if they share a “true” love kiss, Fiona will be stuck with him forever. There’s a lot of stuff I left out, so if you haven’t already, GO WATCH IT. It’s so good and you’re missing out, I promise.
I will talk about the best thing about this movie, the ending. And no, I’m not being funny, it was actually really good. It was peak cinema, beautiful singing, action, humor, and some sadness. They literally had a giant gingerbread man going against guards with hot milk, how awesome is that? If only I was alive to see it in theaters for the first time, the audience probably loved it. One thing about Shrek, the movies give us some of the best songs or versions of songs to go along with their scenes. One of the few times where you can say a song sounds better than the original, Jennifer Saunders gave us that. I know the song word for word, thanks to this scene, and I’m proud.
Unlike *cough cough* Spider-Man: No Way Home, there was a lot to enjoy while watching this movie. From the action to the singing, Shrek 2 was amazing. If you have had the pleasure of watching this movie or will, you understand why this would be my favorite. I can’t say anything bad about the movie which is a rare occurrence since I usually have something to complain about.
Thank you for reading this post, hopefully you enjoyed it!
